Why is it so hard to remember our value and significant contributions to a task, goal or grand plan when we need it the most?

When we’re passed over for a promotion. When the job hunt stretches on far longer than we imagined. When we receive tough feedback—even the constructive kind.

In those moments, it’s like our accomplishments evaporate. The wins blur. The impact we’ve made feels distant, or worse—irrelevant.

Q: Why does that happen?
A: Because rejection and delay hit us in the most human way.

I call it a gut punch…oooff! Arms across our stomachs, bent over…breath completely taken away. This challenges our sense of momentum, our identity, our worth. It taps into our psyche and says, “maybe I’m not enough.”

I’ve been there, done that…once, twice, three times…or more. Definitely more.

But here’s the truth:

  • Feedback doesn’t erase our accomplishments,
  • Hearing “no” doesn’t define our potential, and
  • A long road doesn’t mean a dead end.

If you’re in that space right now — discouraged, doubting, tired — I encourage you to take a moment to revisit your journey–from the beginning to present day. From the small things you achieved that made a big difference to the huge things you accomplished that changed the game. Don’t just think about the wins. Think about the challenges you faced, figured out and conquered. They shaped your ability. They built your skills. Ask trusted peers what they’ve seen you do well. Think about the problems you’ve solved, the impact you’ve made, and the resilience you’ve shown. Let humble sleep and pride prevail.

Your value is still very much there. Your knowledge, skills and abilities still count.

You’ve come too far to let a moment in time redefine your whole journey.
